Bayreuth Festival - Wagner: Das Rheingold
Conducted by Daniel Barenboim and directed by Harry Kupfer, Wagner's 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' has never been better realised on film than in this legendary production from the Bayreuth Festival, recorded in 1992. An allegory on the struggle for ultimate power, the 'Ring' consists of four epic dramas, starting with the prologue, 'Das Rheingold'. After stealing gold from the river Rhine, guarded by the Rhinemaidens, the dwarf Alberich forges it into a ring whose owner will have the power to rule the world. This theft begins a series of events that ultimately leads to the destruction of the old order. Cast includes John Tomlinson (Wotan), Graham Clark (Loge), Günter von Kannen (Alberich) and Linda Finnie (Fricka) with the Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele.
