Maria Callas in Concert (Hamburg 1959 & 1962)
Maria Callas performs two concerts from Hamburg's Musikhalle, the first recorded on 15th May 1959. The repertoire on that occasion includes 'Tu che invoco con orrore' from Act II of Spontini's La Vestale; 'Nel dì della vittoria io le incontrai...Vieni, t'affretta' from Act II of Verdi's Macbeth; 'Una voce poco fa' from Act I of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia; 'Tu che le vanità' from Act IV of Verdi's Don Carlo and 'Oh! s'io potessi dissipar le nubi' from Act II of Bellini's Il Pirata. The NDR Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Nicola Rescigno. The second concert was recorded on 16th March 1962. Callas's repertoire includes 'De cet affreux combat...Pleurez, mes yeux' from Act III of Massenet's Le Cid; the overture from Gounod's Mireille; 'Habanera', 'Entr'acte' and 'Séguidille' from Bizet's Carmen; the overture from Verdi's La forza del destino; 'Surta è la notte...Ernani, involami' from Act I of Verdi's Ernani; 'Nacqui all'affanno e al pianto...Non più mesta' from Act II of Rossini's La Cenerentola and 'O don fatale, o don crudel' from Act III of Verdi's Don Carlo. The NDR Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Georges Prêtre.
